2011 Online Income Tax returns - 25 mill. people may owe more than $3K to IRS

In 2011 income Tax return season, more than 25 million people may owe between 3K to 5K to IRS. Thats the latest stat as per a report published on marketwatch.com. That is if the congrees doesn't extend the AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) law. If the AMT expires, then a lot of people who are getting some tax breaks will not receive these breaks anymore and will start owing money to IRS come 2010 Online income Tax return season!

And the areas which are going to be hit hardest are the main metro politan cities like Ney york, Chicago and big cities in california. Basically any cities whose cost index is higher.

This is going to be a big blow for the middle class, because giving $3000 or more to IRS is a serious amount of money. Thats as much as the earnings or may be savings for one entire month.

But it seems the senate/congress are working on deciding whether this law should be passed for ever or should it be extended each year.

No doubt, anyone who wants to maximize their refunds will be watching this news pretty closely.
