Free online filling of Massachusetts tax returns

With File Free Alliance Program between Internal Revenue Service(IRS)& tax software companies like Turbo Tax, you can file your Federal Tax return at no cost but now as per (Providence Journal, The (RI) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 14- you can file your Massachusetts income tax return for free using the online system of filing tax returns.
This  free filing program was brought back by The Massachusetts Department of Revenue yesterday & it replaced the Telefile program, a file-by-phone system
. As per  Navjeet K. Bal, Massachusetts Revenue Commissioner, effective yesterday, most taxpayers who file basic tax returns or who have used the old Telefile system may use the agency's Web site to file their income tax returns "conveniently, securely and at no cost."

Listed below are the  some of the  eliminations  which do not allow you to make use of this free filing program:

  • You were not a resident of Massachusetts for the entire year.
  • You had self-employment income
  • You had interest, dividends or capital gains or capital losses. (but, if your only interest is from a Massachusetts bank, you may still be eligible to use the program.)
  • You had income from rents, royalties, partnerships or subchapter S corporations.
  • You had interest, dividends or capital gains or capital losses. (However, if your only interest is from a Massachusetts bank, you may still be eligible to use the program.)
  • You claim certain special tax breaks, such as the senior circuit-breaker tax credit (which is essentially part of a statewide property-tax relief program).

This online system called "WebFile for Income", offers a very good structure performing math calculations. If you are doing your return & are interrupted & could not complete it in one time, the system saves your work & you can access it later. And after completion the system provides you with a printable reciept providing you with a proof that the department has recived your information. Thus, this system has its own  pros & cons depending upon your situation.

More information about the Massachusetts online program is available on the state Department of Revenue's Web site: www.mass.gov/dor.
