IRS starts notifying Tax Return Preparers on PTIN Renewals – PTIN Renewal for Tax Return Preparers
IR-2010-106, Oct. 25, 2010
Washington – The Internal Revenue Service or IRS announced that all Tax Return Preparer must renew their Preparer Tax
Identification Number (PTIN) even if they already use the old the one. This new PTIN will be the requirement for all federal
returns and start effectively on January 1.
The IRS creates a video format where you can see how to register your new PTIN. All you need to do is to register an account,
complete the application form of your new PTIN and pay the fee of $64.25 before claiming your new PTIN. To start the registration
you can easily go to www.IRS.gov/taxpros.
According to IRS all Tax Preparers who are using their old PTIN’s must register again using this new sign-up system. All Tax
Preparers who register to this new system will re-assign to their corresponding PTIN number. Notification letters will be sent to
all Tax Preparers who currently have their PTIN.
This PTIN is a 9 digit number where tax preparers can use instead of their SSS or Social Security Number and can only claim at the
IRS.
The new system of PTIN registration will help to regulate the industry of tax preparation. Anyone who will pay to prepare or
claiming a refund must have their new PTIN. All tax professionals like Attorney, CPA or Certified Public Accountant and Enrolled
Agents are included on this new regulation.
